Everyone knows about dialects, and how sometimes you can tell where someone grew up based on how they speak. But can we do the same with data from the Internet? Research says yes, and I'm eager to find out more.
I'm a graduate student at Georgia Tech looking to study language variation through the lens of social media. This entails (1) developing strategies to handle "noisy" natural language data and (2) applying relevant sociolinguistic theory to explain patterns in variation. I am especially interested in variation in orthography and phonology, i.e. how people type and how they pronounce words.Check out my research!
